Rumelhart was a cognitive scientist whose work laid theoretical foundations for modern neural networks. His 1986 paper with Geoffrey Hinton and Ronald Williams popularized backpropagation for training multi-layer networks, and his two-volume Parallel Distributed Processing defined the connectionist approach to the mind. He died in 2011; the Rumelhart Prize in cognitive science is named for him.
