What we collect
Turing Tree collects information you choose to submit, such as newsletter signups or account names, usernames and email addresses, contact messages, profile suggestions, corrections, and contribution details. For access requests, we also save the requested profile, first page visited, referring website domain when available, and campaign labels from the arrival link. This helps us understand where requests come from. The arrival information stays in browser session storage while you browse; we do not save full referring URLs or search terms with your request.
For account holders, we store the submitted account details, a securely hashed credential, account status, login and recent-activity timestamps, the people and organizations you follow, and when you last marked your following feed as read, feedback attributed to that account, and product-usage events associated with the account. We do not store readable passwords.
We also maintain public profile and organization data gathered from public or official sources. Hosting, database, and security systems may process routine technical data such as IP address, browser details, request logs, and timestamps.
To improve the product, we collect first-party usage events such as pages viewed, searches and their result counts, filters used, profile or source links opened, and successful contributions or newsletter signups. These events are associated with the signed-in account for account holders, allowing us to understand feature use and return visits. Page views may also include an approximate country supplied by our hosting provider to help us understand where traffic comes from. This can reflect a VPN or proxy location. We do not collect session recordings, advertising identifiers, IP addresses, or user-agent strings in our product-analytics database.
Web traffic analytics
We also use Vercel Web Analytics to measure site traffic and page views. We exclude admin and account pages and remove query parameters and URL fragments from reported page URLs. We do not send account identifiers or form contents to this service.
How we use it
We use submitted information to send requested updates, review tips, respond to messages, improve the database, prevent abuse, and keep the site running.
We do not sell personal information. We may share data with service providers that operate the site, such as hosting, database, analytics, email, or security services.
Cookies and local storage
Anonymous profile previews use a signed first-party cookie containing the date and up to ten profile paths viewed that day. This supports the daily free allowance, which resets at midnight Copenhagen time.
The site uses a signed session cookie to keep account holders signed in and identify which account submitted feedback. Admin pages also use cookies for authentication. These are used to operate the site, not for cross-site advertising.
Product analytics uses a temporary, server-signed browser-session identifier for anonymous visits. Ask Turing Tree also stores a signed first-party cookie containing the number of free questions used, so the anonymous allowance can work across visits. Signed-in activity is associated server-side with the account. None of this is used for advertising or tracking across other websites.
Corrections and deletion
If you want to correct public profile data, remove a submitted email, or ask about data associated with you, use the contact page. We will review reasonable requests in the context of maintaining an accurate public-interest database.
External links and changes
Turing Tree links to external sites such as Google Scholar, X, LinkedIn, Wikipedia, organization websites, and source articles. Their privacy practices are separate from ours.
We may update this policy as the product changes. Material updates will be reflected on this page.
