🇺🇸 American

Girshick reshaped how AI finds objects in images through the R-CNN family of models and Detectron, an open-source toolkit for building such systems. He co-founded Vercept in 2024 to build AI that operates software. Anthropic acquired it in February 2026 and brought its team into Claude’s computer-use work.[1]

Selected contributions

  • Paper2017

Focal Loss for Dense Object Detection

With Tsung-Yi Lin, Priya Goyal, Kaiming He and Piotr Dollár

Improved object detection by focusing training on difficult examples, preventing easy background regions from overwhelming learning and helping a simpler detector achieve strong recognition accuracy.

  • Paper2017

    Mask R-CNN

With Kaiming He, Georgia Gkioxari and Piotr Dollár

Extended object detection to trace the outline of each individual object, allowing computers to identify what appears in an image and precisely where it is.

  • Paper2016

You Only Look Once: Unified, Real-Time Object Detection

With Joseph Redmon, Santosh Divvala and Ali Farhadi

Introduced YOLO, detecting objects and their locations in a single pass through a neural network, making fast, real-time object detection possible across an entire image.
