Gelly helped pioneer Monte Carlo tree search for computer Go. With David Silver, he developed extensions that made MoGo the first program to reach master level on the 9×9 game, an important step toward the search-and-learning systems later demonstrated by AlphaGo; at Google he also studied generative models and reinforcement learning.
