Adam Tauman Kalai announced on X that he had co-founded the [Institute for Responsible Superintelligence](/org/institute-for-responsible-superintelligence) with Shafi Goldwasser and Vinod Vaikuntanathan. The August 24 launch reveals the nonprofit Kalai said he was starting after leaving OpenAI in July.
RESI aims to make advanced AI safe by design: defining safety properties in advance, developing mechanisms whose guarantees can be analyzed before deployment, and building proofs of concept that frontier labs can test and adopt. Its research draws on cryptography, mathematics, economics, law, and AI safety.
The Cambridge, Massachusetts institute is fiscally sponsored by the Edward Charles Foundation and plans an active visitor program connecting its researchers with frontier labs and the wider scientific community.
