Alex Turner announced on X that he had resigned from Google DeepMind, where he had worked as a research scientist since October 2023. Turner said he left in June after Google agreed to let the Pentagon use its AI for classified operations.
He argued that the agreement abandoned DeepMind’s founding commitment against military and mass-surveillance uses without adequate safeguards. Turner said he had spent months advocating internally for restrictions, including meaningful human control over AI targeting systems. He has not announced a next role.
