Andrew Gordon Wilson joins Perplexity as research lead

Andrew Gordon Wilson announced on X that he is joining Perplexity as Research Lead. He said the team will work in the open on continual learning, collaboration between AI agents and other directions aimed at advancing the field.

Wilson also said in a LinkedIn announcement that he will continue to run his academic research group at New York University, making Perplexity and NYU concurrent roles rather than a departure from academia. At NYU, he is a professor in the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Center for Data Science.

His research helped establish Bayesian deep learning, which equips neural networks to represent uncertainty, and produced practical tools including stochastic weight averaging and GPyTorch. The new role brings that combination of foundational research and widely used software into Perplexity's research program.
