OpenAI ethics lead Chloé Bakalar leaves after less than a year

Chloé Bakalar left OpenAI in July, less than a year after joining as AI Ethics Lead and Member of Technical Staff, the Financial Times reported. No next employer has been announced.

“We’re thankful for Chloé’s contributions,” an OpenAI spokesperson told the FT. The company said responsibility for ethical questions is distributed across multiple research teams and embedded in its model-development process.

Bakalar joined OpenAI in August 2025 after six years at Meta, where she became chief ethicist and led work to translate ethical principles into processes used by product and AI teams. Her work spans responsible model development, human–AI interaction, and the practical governance of AI systems.
