Jean-Stanislas Denain announced on LinkedIn that he has joined METR after two years at Epoch AI. As a Member of Technical Staff, he will work on assessing how much AI is speeding up AI research and development.
The work will involve going inside AI developers to measure AI’s contribution to their research and publishing the findings. Denain said he wants to produce independent evidence about how quickly AI capabilities are increasing, including whether AI-assisted research is creating a feedback loop that accelerates further progress.
METR’s proposed assessment approach would examine unreleased models, research inputs and staff interviews to distinguish AI-driven acceleration from other factors, and identify bottlenecks that could limit it.
