Joshua Achiam announced on X that he is leaving OpenAI after nine years. He said his final day will be July 24 and described the departure as “graduating,” without naming a specific reason or next role.
Achiam joined OpenAI as an intern in 2017 and went on to work in AI safety, lead the Mission Alignment team, and become Chief Futurist. In his announcement, he said he plans to continue working toward a future shaped by safe AGI outside the walls of a frontier lab.
