Jürgen Schmidhuber has joined Sakana AI as Chief Scientific Advisor, the company announced. The appointment is alongside his existing positions at KAUST and IDSIA.

Schmidhuber will help guide Sakana AI's newly formed Recursive Self-Improvement Lab, which studies systems that can improve how AI research itself is done. The company said he will travel regularly to Tokyo to work with its team and support the wider Japanese AI community.

Sakana AI linked the appointment to its work on world models—systems that learn useful representations of how environments behave—and to research including the Darwin Gödel Machine and The AI Scientist.
