Rishub Jain and Joshua Jacob launch Sampura Research

Rishub Jain and Joshua Jacob announced in a Sampura Research blog post that they have left Google DeepMind to start Sampura Research, a nonprofit focused on human-AI complementarity for scalable oversight.

The team plans to build better "judges": human, AI, or combined systems that assess whether an AI system is correct and behaving as intended. Its initial work will develop benchmarks and methods that route evaluation tasks to the human or AI best suited to handle them.

Jain spent seven years at Google DeepMind, including four years working on AlphaFold 2 and 3, before co-leading scalable-oversight research. Jacob co-led Human Data Engineering at Google DeepMind, helping prepare human and AI-generated data for model training and evaluation, after earlier work on self-driving technology at Waymo.

Sampura says it is backed by an initial $11 million grant from Coefficient Giving and is fiscally sponsored by Rethink Priorities.
